San Felipe de Jesús is a village at the foot of the hills just north of Antigua, reached by a short paved road. It is known across Guatemala for its Gothic style sanctuary and the Señor Sepultado image, and the procession that comes through here during Lent is one of the big events of the year. The national hospital is also in San Felipe, which brings people in daily, and the weekend food stalls, carved furniture and traditional sweets give the village its own character.
Compared with Jocotenango next door, San Felipe has a more residential, lived in feel with less hustle and bustle. There are a couple of wonderful gated communities here, and homes range from traditional village houses to newer construction on the edges, all close enough to walk or cycle into Antigua.
