Jocotenango sits directly north of Antigua on the Chimaltenango road and is, in practice, an extension of the city. It has its own municipality, a central park, a football stadium, a shopping mall and a brightly painted baroque church, and its August fair is one of the biggest in the valley. The streets are cobblestone, but because Jocotenango is on the edge of Antigua rather than in it, prices are lower per square metre than the historic centre.
The big difference from Antigua is the feel. This is a hustle and bustle, full time living area with far fewer tourists: day to day Guatemalan life a few minutes from the park. There are several gated communities here that buyers find appealing, and it is a good fit for anyone looking at lower cost homes or Airbnb and rental investments close to Antigua.
