The Antigua Guatemala Community

La Antigua Guatemala, commonly referred to as just "Antigua", is a city in the Central Highlands of Guatemala, famous for its well-preserved Spanish Colonial architecture, as well as a number of spectacular ruined churches. The name means "Old Guatemala" and it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

At an elevation of 1,500 meters (5,000 ft) the weather in Antigua is absolutely pleasant, with temperatures of between 72 to 75℉ (22 to 24℃) all year round, cooling in the mornings and the evenings and 300 days of sunshine a year. Rainy season, just like in the rest of the country, runs from May to October, with an average of about 40 inches of rainfall.

Antigua is a small city, easily walkable from end to end with the Central Park as the central hub, boasting many hotels, coffee houses, boutiques, charming shops and restaurants to suit anyone's taste, from Italian, to French, to Mexican, to local cuisine, to fast food... you name it, Antigua has it!
Addresses are very easy to find (unlike the rest of the country) as it has the Spanish Colonial layout with the Main Plaza marking the town's center; streets that run east to west and avenues that run north to south.
The city offers something for all residents and travelers tastes, combining colonial history with modern living to an array of cultural activities which include art galleries and exhibits, performing arts, popular arts, films, forums and cultural tourism in general.
Antigua also hosts the largest celebrations for Lent and Easter in the Western Hemisphere. The history of the processions dates back to the early 1500's and began with the arrival of Don Pedro de Alvarado -Guatemala's first conquistador- from Spain.

There is one small supermarket, one open-style local market and one organic farm (with a Farmer's Market every Saturday) in the heart of the City and "tiendas" (small convenience stores) all throughout. For bigger purchases like furniture and appliances, big shopping malls or even movie theaters, Guatemala City is your next stop at a short 45-minute drive without traffic.
